The Jemez-to-BC Immersion Program is a service program unlike any other at Boston College. Most other service programs emphasize leaving campus in order to serve an underprivileged community and to experience a culture different from our own. We seek to do this on campus. In November, a team of Boston College students will host approximately fourteen high school students from the Pueblo of Jemez Indian Reservation, NM over a four-day period, in an effort to better prepare them for the college environment. Many of our guests come from a poor socioeconomic background and are often the first in their families to attend a four-year college, leaving them relatively unprepared for the many opportunities and difficulties that a college environment presents. We hope to level the playing field by giving our guests a true insider’s look into college from the experts themselves…you!
Along with participating in various programs and information sessions offered by the team, the visiting students will also be afforded the opportunity to accompany their hosts to classes, meetings and other extracurricular activities. As a host, it is your chance to serve by simply being yourself. This program is ideal for those with busy schedules or who might be unsure of their commitments for this upcoming semester but who would still like to participate in a service program and make a difference on campus.
The dates for the program are November 14-18th.

BC to Jemez Program
Reciprocity is one of the key focuses of the Jemez program as a whole. In addition to hosting Jemez students at BC, a group of BC students have the opportunity to spend a week over winter break living with host families on the reservation, in the hopes of gaining true understanding and appreciation for Pueblo culture. Participants will have the opportunity to view the commissioning of the new tribal government & traditional buffalo dances, along with volunteering at various placements throughout the Pueblo, including the departments of education, nutrition, finance, & resource protection. We’re looking for dedicated, hard-working students with a genuine interest in learning about one of our nation’s most beautiful (but unfortunately often overlooked) cultures.
Trip dates are set for January 4-January 12, 2010. Juniors who will be abroad during the Spring semester 2010 are welcome to apply.
